Women Geographers and Science

Short presentation of the event: What does Geography study? Is it considered a STEM discipline? Have there been outstanding female geographers in history? Who were the first female geographers? Is the feminine presence prominent in today’s Geography?

All these questions are answered in the exhibition “Women Geographers and Science” and in the broadcast of the I Scientific Meeting of young female geographers held on February 9th at the University of Alicante, Spain, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The image used in the poster is a canvas painted at the beginning of the 19th century by José Peyret Alcañiz from Alicante (Spain) with the title “Allegory of Geography”. During this century, there are several women travelers who made descriptions of the places they visited and even made cartography. Works with such scientific rigor that they were presented at Geography conferences. Some of these women, very few, were recognized as geographers, and admitted to geographic societies; others came to study this discipline and to work as teachers and researchers. The exhibition introduces these first women geographers and ends with a series of data and evidence on the scarce presence of women in current Geography.

The exhibition consists of 12 posters accompanied by audios in various languages (Spanish, Valencian, English, French, Italian, German and Polish). The link can be consulted at any time so the exhibition is available for the entire duration of Geonight 2021.

– Publicise geography as a science, with special attention to the contributions of female geographers

More specific objectives:

– educate about the contributions of the first female geographers

– draw attention to the masculinization of the geographic science

– contribute to awakening of new vocations for geographical science among the youngest generations

– make visible the research of young geographers
