Károly Somogyi City and County Library
The Károly Somogyi City and County Library is the Library of Szeged, one of the largest cities in Hungary.
The foundations of the library were provided by Károly Somogyi, canon of Esztergom, on 26th April, 1880, after the town was ruined in a great flood in 1879. The old collection of documents contains unparalleled rarities, including botanical and geographical books and maps. It was important for the priest to serve the spiritual reconstruction of Szeged with his book collection.
Among the directors of the Somogyi Library are well-known writers and scholars, like István Tömörkény, Ferenc Móra, etc.
From the very beginning, the collection followed the needs of the population and the development of library services.
In addition to traditional library services, there is an e-learning space that meets the challenges of the 21st century.The institution is also the place of many interesting activities and programs, such as library classes, robotics courses and other programs.
The library also takes the responsibility to support the smaller settlements in the county with its professional competence.
Somogyi Library puts great emphasis on quality, so in 2017 it became a Qualified Library, and in 2019 it won the highest professional recognition of the Hungarian library system, the Library Quality Award.
Currently, the coronavirus epidemic has rewritten the operation of the institution, but with the help of the internet thousands of documents are still accessible. Many digital services are available on the library’s website: http://www.sk-szeged.hu/
Geography Night 2021 Quiz
The Somogyi Library is also happy to join any initiative that promotes sciences. We invite those who are interested to play with us. With the help of a quiz, we present the special places and natural heritage of Csongrád-Csanád county.
The quiz consists of 13 + 1 questions. One correct answer must be marked for each question. A prize will be drawn among the correct.
The quiz will be awailable from April 7-29, 2021.
