As part of the international event Geo Night, we are organizing an educational and interactive lecture and workshop titled “In the Footsteps of Marco Polo”. The aim of this activity is to highlight the significance of this famous traveler, explore his route to the Far East, and popularize geography as a science through engaging games and tasks.

Program Highlights:
– Lecture – Using visual presentations and interactive elements, participants will learn about:

Who Marco Polo was and what his journey to China entailed
A cartographic representation of his route and the geographical features of the regions he traveled through
The historical and economic importance of the Silk Road
Marco Polo’s influence on Europe’s perception of Asia
– Workshop – Hands-on activities designed to encourage exploration:

An interactive map featuring key locations of Marco Polo’s journey
Geography-related puzzles and logical challenges based on historical events
A simulation of trade exchanges along the Silk Road
– Board Game: “On the Silk Road” – A fun and dynamic board game where participants embark on a journey along the trade route from Europe to Asia, facing historical and geographical challenges that merchants and travelers encountered on their way.

The goal of this activity is to spark interest in geography, and cartography through interactive learning, teamwork, and play. The program is designed for students, educators, and anyone passionate about travel and discovering the world!

 

Main objectives:

Popularizing Geography as a Science – By exploring Marco Polo’s journey and the historical Silk Road, participants will gain a deeper understanding of geography, cartography, and cultural exchanges between Europe and Asia.

Enhancing Geographical and Historical Awareness – The lecture, workshop, and board game will provide participants with insights into the significance of historical trade routes, geographical landmarks, and their impact on global connections.

Encouraging Interactive and Experiential Learning – Through hands-on activities, an interactive map, puzzles, and a simulation of trade exchanges, participants will engage in an active learning experience that makes geography and history more engaging and relatable.

Fostering Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills – The workshop and board game will challenge participants to think strategically, solve geographical puzzles, and make decisions based on historical and geographical contexts.

Promoting Teamwork and Collaboration – The social and interactive aspects of the event, particularly the “On the Silk Road” board game, will encourage communication, cooperation, and teamwork among participants.

Inspiring Curiosity About Exploration and Travel – By retracing Marco Polo’s route and understanding the challenges of long-distance travel in historical contexts, participants will develop a greater appreciation for global exploration, trade, and cultural interactions.
