Location Detectives: Measure, Explore, Discover!

Description:

Location analysis is the process of finding the best location for a facility, considering a range of relevant spatial factors. These factors may include terrain slope, land cover, population density, and others. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide the necessary tools to process this data, enabling the identification of optimal locations. This capability has practical applications across diverse sectors, including business, environmental protection, and spatial planning. During this workshop, participants will utilize the QGIS software to conduct a location analysis exercise. The objective will be to identify optimal locations for a youth park within their municipality. This hands-on activity will allow students to cultivate transferable skills such as digital literacy, problem-solving proficiency, and spatial reasoning, while simultaneously gaining insights into the practical applications of geographical knowledge.

Main objectives:

– Develop spatial analysis skills – Participants will learn to evaluate key spatial factors and apply GIS tools to identify optimal locations
– Enhance digital and problem-solving skills – Through hands-on use of QGIS, students will improve their digital literacy, critical thinking, and data-driven decision-making skills
– Apply geographic knowledge to real-world planning – By conducting a location analysis for a youth park, participants will understand how GIS supports urban and environmental planning, making geography practical and impactful
