Geography of Vine and Wine in the World. The diffusion processes throughout History
Description:
From 19:00 to 20:00, Dr Juan Piqueras, a professor of Geography at the University of Valencia and an expert in viticultural geography, will present the conference “Geography of Vineyards and Wine in the World: Diffusion Processes Throughout History.” His research focuses on the geographical processes of wine production and distribution and the social, cultural, and economic factors influencing these dynamics. The conference will explore the historical diffusion of vineyards, the impact of climate and soil on wine quality, globalisation effects, and emerging trends in wine production.
From 20:00 to 21:30, the Geographical Wine Tasting of the 2025 Night of Geography will take place, featuring wines from Celler Jaume de Puntiró. This tasting highlights how geography shapes wine flavour, emphasizing the role of terroir—including soil, climate, and topography—alongside local viticultural practices and winemaking techniques.
Main objectives:
The main objective of this event is to explore the relationship between geography and viticulture by examining the historical diffusion of vineyards and the geographical factors influencing wine production. Through a conference and a guided wine tasting, the event aims to highlight how elements such as climate, soil, topography, and local practices shape the characteristics of wine. It also seeks to promote geographical awareness by demonstrating the profound connection between place and product, making geography more tangible and engaging for attendees.
