North versus South? – Manifestations of the territorial dichotomy in India

Description:

India is the most diverse country in the world. The ethnic, linguistic, religious and caste structure of its population results in a heterogeneity that is hardly comparable in other countries. The extraordinary diversity naturally results in serious regional differences. The complex method published in 2010, the SENTIENT Index, is used to measure these territorial differences. By applying this method, the relative development rankings of the administrative hierarchy of the districts were determined based on data from the last three censuses. Relying on the database, we can make several novel findings regarding territorial differences using mathematical and statistical methods. For example, we can identify lagging or exceptionally developing districts, the geographical location of polarizing regions, but we can also draw conclusions about the factors most closely related to development. The socio-economic processes have become visible, the analysis of which allows us to make a prognosis regarding the – regional – changes taking place in the development of territorial units. It is striking that the regions of the southern Indian states have been developing at a faster pace in recent years, the reasons we will investigate during the presentation.
