Envisioning Landscape – Noli

Description:

The Genova-Savona section of the Italian Association of Geography Teachers is organising an event for the eighth time (in continuity since the first year Geonight was set up), but this year the event will be multiplied into 5 simultaneous initiatives, following the fil rouge of historical descriptions and views (from the 17th to the early 20th century) by both foreign travellers, scholars and artists from Liguria. More specifically, these will be urban and peri-urban routes on the traces of the geo-iconographic sources analysed by researchers of the University of Genoa in the project PRIN (Project of Significant National Interest) ‘Envisioning Landscapes’, financed by the European Union through the PNRR Next Generation EU funds, coordinated by Prof. Pietro Piana (University of Genoa, Department of Political and International Sciences).
The project explores 18th- and 19th-century iconographic and written sources in the regions of Lazio, Liguria and Trentino-Alto Adige to understand the evolution of landscapes over time and offer insights into current landscape policies. Using an interdisciplinary approach, three universities (University of Genoa, University of Roma Tre, University of Trento) collaborate to analyse pilot cases and study areas, testing a methodological model on different sources. The project has mainly three distinct phases: research and digitisation, development of a geodatabase, analysis of specific topics and creation of a web interface to engage the public. The ultimate goal is to share the results and involve the community in rediscovering the hidden stories of the landscape.

Main objectives:

The aim of the initiative is to disseminate the research carried out by the University of Genoa to the local community, involving participants in the rediscovery of past landscapes through the geo-iconographic sources analysed during the two-year project.
