On routes to the Indies. Italians and the story of the discovery of other worlds
Dopo l’apertura della rotta marittima occidentale alle medie latitudini avvenuta alla fine del Quattrocento, si ebbe un periodo di viaggi straordinari, di scoperte e di esplorazioni.
La curiosità, la ricerca di fama e di ricchezze, il desiderio di trovare un passaggio per l’Oriente, i miti dell’antichità e quelli più recenti, spinsero molti viaggiatori italiani verso le terre poste al di là dell’Oceano Atlantico.
Agli arcipelaghi caraibici e al Nuovo Mondo, descritti da Cristoforo Colombo e Amerigo Vespucci a Meridione, si aggiunsero le esperienze nelle regioni settentrionali, con i tentativi di ridefinire l’ecumene antica grazie alle informazioni, testuali e cartografiche, aggiornate su quelle coste che dovevano rappresentare i paesi dell’Asia estrema raccontati da Marco Polo.
In tale contesto è centrale la figura di Giovanni Verrazzano, il fiorentino che, al servizio del re di Francia Francesco I, nel 1524 navigò lungo le coste del Nord America descrivendo nella sua relazione le terre e le popolazioni incontrate, cartografate dal fratello Girolamo.
After the opening of the western sea route to the middle latitudes at the end of the fifteenth century, there was a period of extraordinary voyages, discoveries and explorations.
Curiosity, the search for fame and riches, the desire to find a passage to the East, the myths of antiquity and more recent ones, pushed many Italian travelers towards the lands beyond the Atlantic Ocean.
The experiences in the northern regions were added to the Caribbean archipelagos and the New World, described by Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci in the South, with attempts to redefine the ancient ecumene thanks to the information, textual and cartographic, updated on those coasts that were supposed to represent the countries of Extreme Asia told by Marco Polo.
In this context, the figure of Giovanni Verrazzano is central, the Florentine who, in the service of the King of France Francis I, sailed along the coasts of North America in 1524, describing in his report the lands and populations encountered, mapped by his brother Girolamo.
