Ganges – life and death on the banks of the holy river

Country: Hungary – City: Pécs – Address: Hungary, Pécs, Széchenyi square 7-8.

Description:

India’s sacred river has had an outstanding impact on its environment throughout history, which has not faded even to this day. According to the beliefs of the Hindus, the river connecting Heaven and Earth fulfilled the needs of people as a good mother, but her well-nourished children treated her like a stepmother in recent decades, the living river is in trouble. During the lecture, illustrated with numerous diagrams, figures and pictures, we analyse the impact of the hydrogeographic characteristics of the Ganges on the socio-economic life, the population and settlement geography, and the cultural geography of its plains.

Main objectives:

With the educational presentation, we would like to present one of the most densely populated areas in the world, the Ganges Plain, to make it clear and synthesize knowledge of physical geography and human geography to the audience on the example of a region that can be a model area for global responsibility.
