Rooted since the 19th century in the history of French agronomic research and teaching , the René Dumont – Paris Garden of Tropical Agronomy carries a strong historic and memorial heritage that invites us to reinvent our connections and practices with local and international territories.
Participating for the first time to GeoNight this year, we would like to welcome about 50 participants within the René Dumont tropical agronomy garden at dusk for an original visit, guided by some of our members and partners (geography and social sciences academics and students, development practitioners, urban farmers and librarians) through some of its most emblematic features. The Garden hosted the colonial exhibition of 1907: visiting it is therefore a pretext for a geographic, historical and economical exploration of development issues.
Through the lens of geography, our goal is to explore with them the links that can still be drawn between the gardens complex past and current global dynamics: evolutions in agronomy, agricultural and food practices, migrations, colonialism, ecology, ecofeminism, etc. An exhibit on René Dumonts research and legacy will be presented in the garden as well. A convivial moment will be organized at the end of the visit at the restaurant La Belle Gabrielle (based on integration through work) in order to encourage further discussions between the participants and the guides.
The itinerant scientific visit of the Garden will include four stops, each focusing on a specific topic in relationship with one of the Gardens landmarks. The provisional programme of the visit includes the following stages:
– History of the Garden
– Representation of women in the French colonial context
– International migration: linking the past and the present
– Agronomic research for sustainable development: global perspective and local practice.
Main objectives:
Our goal is to introduce the Garden to a wider public, and transform it into an open and inclusive agora, connected with the world and inspiring innovation. We would like to welcome the participants for an open exchange on global dynamics, while sharing with them some of the research and expertise of our members.

As the first multi-actor research and cooperation cluster, dedicated to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and with an international projection, we gather 23 actors based in the Paris Garden of Tropical Agronomy (research institutes, universities, associations and NGOs, consultancy firms, social enterprises, a development agency etc.). The event proposed for GeoNight has been more particularly designed with the research unit Développement et Sociétés (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne – Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD)), which specialises on social sciences research on development issues.
